Church of Santa María in Luanco with the images of Jesus and the Virgin again on each side of the altar
We have something in Asturias with Holy Week and the sea, or failing the beach (yes, the mountain also marks us and we cannot be far from the green). But it is during these days of sadness and at the same time a celebration for Christians, when (perhaps due to contrasts) this relationship becomes more acute.
If in Ribadesella on Good Friday they organize horse races on the beach, the Procession of the Venia in Luanco gather Jesus and Mary to the shore of the Cantabrian Sea on Easter day.
As a metaphor for what Jesus' death meant for his mother, on Good Friday the two figures are separated. That night, the Procession of the Callandinos leads in a respectful silence to a Virgin Mary, completely covered with a black veil, from the parish church to the Conception Chapel.
Transfer of the Christ of the Resurrection on Easter Day for the Procession of La Venia in Luanco
The day on which his Resurrection occurs, the image of Jesus that bears the same name is transferred at noon with solemnity from the Church of Santa María to the small beach of La Riba a few hundred meters away.
There he will wait until at the opposite end the figure still mournful of the Virgin appears, who leaves the Conception Chapel to meet his son.
